Hiking Adventures

February 14, 2019

Now that the temperature is rising and spring draws nearer, it’s time to get back outdoors with your furry pal! One fun activity you can share with your dog is a good hike. Fresh air does everyone good, but here are some tips for when you take your dog hiking.

What to bring
When you go on a hike with your dog, you need to make sure they are as well prepared and equipped as you are. You will need to bring plenty of water and a portable/collapsable bowl, some treats, and a sturdy leash. We like Brahma leashes. They come in various lengths, are durable, and easy to clean. We use a longer leash so our dogs have more opportunity to explore.  We also carry a first aid kit, bags to pick up any waste, and keep a towel in the car to wipe them off should they get wet and/or dirty. If you plan on being outdoors for awhile, it might be a good idea to bring a blanket or something for your dog to lie on.

Things to consider
Before taking your dog on a hike, it is important to make sure he’s up for the challenge. You may need to take your dog on a series of long walks to build up his endurance and stamina. While on a hike with your dog, it is a good idea to take frequent breaks to give your dog some water and rest his paws if the terrain is particularly rough or full of sharp sticks and stones. Watch your pace as well to avoid overexertion and look for shade when you do take breaks. Make sure you don’t go hiking during the hottest part of the day. You also need to be very aware of your surroundings. Watch out for poisonous plants as well as any critters, creatures, and animals that could be lurking around the corner. Keep your dog on a leash to steer him clear of these dangers. After your hike, check your dog for fleas, ticks, and any other debris that may have gotten caught in his fur or stuck to his paws.

All things considered, hiking with your dog is a great way to get some exercise and a nice bonding activity. Now get out there and enjoy those trails!
